Apache originally came out for DOS in 1995 and was later upgraded to Windows in 1996, featuring a different box and a few minor in-game changes. Digital Integration's first successful foray into the helicopter simulator market was very successful. Helicopter Game: Helicopter Game is a classic game of balance and timing. So, you think you can fly? Well, don't be so sure! It gets pretty hairy up there, once you're fighting gravity and dealing with an X and a Y axis you might just realize that flying is for the birds. Apache is one of the few titles that can offer any player the ability to plug and play. It also increases the challenge of the game in many different ways. The simulation is based on the AH-64D Apache Longbow, and features some of the best-looking 3-D effects I've seen in a sim. As far as combat goes, no expense was spared.

In Campaign mode, the player can choose which 3 areas to enter in a tour of duty. The Campaign mode also plays video clips and has a briefing before any mission. The player is given a choice of ordnance, and is able to zoom in on the mission map, giving them a satellite view of the area or target and meteorological data.

Apache was a commercial success, with global sales above 200,000 units by February 1996. More than 120,000 of these sales derived from the United States.[7]

A reviewer for Next Generation called the game 'a stunningly realistic simulation of one of the most complex military aircrafts [sic] of all time'. He complimented the effectiveness of the polygon graphics, the selection of modes for network and modem play, the extreme realism of the flight simulation, and the balance and ingenuity of the scenario designs. He gave it five out of five stars.[4]

Apache: Air Assault features 16 multi-stage missions involving air and ground strike operations off the coast of Africa, the mountains of the Middle East and the jungles of Central America, each meticulously created using high resolution map data from real-world satellite photography. Apache helicopters are some of the most sophisticated combat aircraft on the planet — the player gets to fly multiple variations of them, each with their own extreme firepower and highly-detailed damage modeling.
